Chrono-Logics – presentation of BaNd:expanded in Riga

From August 27 till September 4 the “BaNd:expanded” atelier “CHRONO-LOGICS” for young performing art professionals from Baltic and Nordic countries is taking place in Riga. Actors, directors, dramaturgs and choreographers from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Norway, Finland and Sweden are taking part in the workshop run by Croatian dramaturg Goran Sergej Pristaš with support of his collaborator in BADco. Tomislav Medak and British theatre researcher Alan Read.

The workshop paradoxically enough started with the evaluation where participants shared their impressions on the final presentation, which had happened on September 3. The promises made and directions envisioned during this evaluation framed the one week long workshop focused on the notion of time. Throughout the workshop different concepts of time and its representation like “time after (in)completion”, “projective temporality”, “time that remains”, “operative time” “working time”, “timeless time”, “life-time”, “time-space compression” etc. were discussed. The final presentation will offer spectators to become the participants as well, taking time to communicate with the artists their knowledge about relationships between time and performance. The audience is invited to join the time flows of different directions and speed, as well as the different fragments of time.

BaNd:expanded presentation takes place on September 3, 2013 at 16.00 at Dirty Deal Teatro in Riga, Maskavas str. 12/2. Welcome!

The last BaNd:expanded atelier approaching

Three years have almost passed, and the last one of six BaNd:expanded ateliers for young performing arts professionals from Baltic and Nordic countries will take place in Latvia from August 27 till September 4, 2013. Altogether 34 artists are now part of the BaNd:expanded network.

Moderated by members of performance collective BADco. Goran Sergej Pristaš and Tomislav Medak, this atelier will focus the logics and logistics of temporality in performing arts and artistic labour in general.

Goran Sergej Pristaš explains: ‘While different temporal structures are always represented in spatial terms, the lab will start from a presumption that theatre is always temporal mode of representation of spatial manifestations. Instead of a final performance the aim of the lab is to create a complex temporal diagram of encounters, swerves and spatial relations in BaNd:expanded. Throughout the workshop we will disscuss different concepts of time and its representation like “time after (in)completion”, “projective temporality”, “time that remains”, “operative time” “working time”, “timeless time”, “life-time”, “time-space compression” etc.’

The first part of the atelier (27.-31.08.) will take place in the recreation centre “Bruveri” in Sigulda. The last days of the atelier will coincide with the International Festival of Contemporary Theatre “Homo Novus”, and the participants will have the opportunity to see performances, meet artists and present the outcome of the BaNd:expanded atelier during the festival.

BaNd:expanded in Malmö – coming soon

The next BaNd:expanded atelier is taking place on April 22-29 at Inkonst in Malmö. Run by performance related artist and choreographer Mårten Spångberg and theoretician Bojana Cvejić, it will explore the ‘curatorial turn’ in performing arts and encourage artists to become the curators. “Merged roles create new forms of responsibility. Responsibilities that we believe in can tell us a lot both – about who we are, how we understand our work, and how others, not least curators, understand us,” – says Mårten.

Next to seminars and discussions around the topic the intention is to create during the workshop a “collaborative” presentation or performance that intend to follow or use as dramaturgical leit-motif the script of a generic “groupshow”, i.e., to use an exhibition format from a concept to promotion, from a choice of artists to hanging, from a curatorial strategy to a catalogue or a publication. The audience is welcome to the “BaNd:expanded Groupshow” at Inkonst on April 27, 2013.

BaNd:expanded in Finland soon

The next BaNd:expanded atelier is taking place on November 8-14 in Helsinki and Tampere. This atelier themed on ART AND ACTIVISM. TACTICAL PERFORMANCE focuses on political strategies in art and explores the connection between art and activism. Together with the mentor of the atelier, American author, performer, and the founding director of the Center for Artistic Activism/West Coast, Larry M. Bogad, participants will investigate and practice the tactical performence, which engages with and supports current social conflict/social movement campaigns. Artists are asked to bring to the Atelier a political issue or problem they want to confront and explore in performance, and at least one nonfictional text that deals with that issue. During the first phase in Helsinki participants will see and discuss the performances of the Baltic Circle Festival. The second phase of the workshop in Tampere will be dedicated to theory and practice of the tactical performance.

Vilnius report

Today we are leaving from Vilnius to Alanta. We have experienced here three intense days in the city and in the Studio of the National Theatre with each other and (virtually) with those people whose diaries artists have chosen to work with. A lot of different perspectives, perceptions, ideas, emotions… And a lot of artistic approaches on diary and documentation. I’ll try to share some impressions later next week, because now we will go to the deep and wild countryside without internet access.

Here are some pictures made by Ville Hyvonen – to prove that we were here working hard :)

BaNd:expanded in Lithuania soon

The next BaNd:expanded atelier in Lithuania is approaching. It will take place in Vilnius and Alanta on June 19-25, 2012. The theme of the atelier will evolve around notions of a DIARY and DOCUMENTATION. Participants are asked to continue the chosen real diary from the viewpoint of the diary-keeper, i.e., another identity, be it from another culture, another country, another sex or age. The documentation may be video, sound, text, performance etc. but presented as short presentations several times during the workshop. Mentor: Kirsten Dehlholm, artistic director of Hotel Pro Forma. Tutor: Ville MJ Hyvönen, video artist.

Art as Occupation

Here is the lecture “Art as Occupation” by artist and filmmaker Hito Steyerl delivered at the conference “The Autonomy Project -7″ on October 9, 2011 at Van Abbemuseum (starting at 45’14):

It was used as a starting point for reflection at the final discussion session of BaNd:expanded on February 19 at Theaterhuset Avant Garden in Trondheim.

Here is the article by Hito Steyerl “Art as Occupation: Claims for an Autonomy of Life”.

And here is the article by Boris Groys mentioned by Manuel Pelmus during our conversations: “Self-Design and Aesthetic Responsibility”.

Two days of a very intense experience here in Trondheim. I came on February 17, and I was a bit worried after reading Krista’s comment. Surprisingly enough it turned out that “just” listening to each other and discussing a variety of issues suggested by participants’ presentations is very very interesting and inspiring.

Today we’ll try to sum up.
